re: Another Beginning (Saint's Exploration Initiative)

The year is 2945. The private war for Calesi independence is over and the colonies are reforming and preparing to expand. Many ships and many lives were lost through the S3G extraction led by Admiral Jao Thaun. The SS Redemption, a Pegasus Class Carrier, destroyed along with the majority of Militia fighters and support craft leaving the Saints 3G Militia decimated. The Calesi, a violent sect of people of whom the Saints were attempting to reach with the Gospel of Christ, however, were wiped from existence. Sadly, the Calesi Battle Guard initiated the attack on the United Empire of Earth thus bringing about their own demise along with many Citizen Saints and UEE personnel.

It was only through the heroics of Admiral Thaun and the Archangels that many Saints were evacuated before it was too late. The Council had been given ample notice by the UEE and the extraction was well underway when the absolute worse possible outcome occurred. The Vanduul arrived. What started out as a peace keeping mission turned into a bloodbath when two Kingships and the Vanduul armada dropped out of Quantum drive on the far side of the moon.

The UEE was so focused on the Calesi it failed to notice the Vanduul raid until it was too late to retreat. It took a meager twelve minutes for the Vanduul to completely annihilate the UEE Peacekeeper taskforce and turn its attention on the Saints. Admiral Thaun positioned his flagship between the retreating Saints and the Vanduul Horde effectively shielding the innocents from certain death as they fled from the surface of Calesi with every man, woman and child still breathing, the ships struggling to achieve escape velocity critically laden with terrified survivors. Planetary bombardment continued with devastating effect and many people perished.

Unbelievably, the Redemption was successfully repelling the devastating attacks of the Kingship. The helmsman, an unknown Saint who took over the pilot seat when the original pilot was killed by shrapnel from a violent atmospheric vent, was maneuvering the Redemption in ways unknown by modern piloting. It was stated by an anonymous Archangel that the Redemption was moving through debris and avoiding the Kingship batteries as if it was being controlled by God Himself. The ballistics had run dry and the laser turrets overheated when the last of the ambulatory Saints entered the jump point. Admiral Thaun, smeared with grease from wrestling with a damaged engine hypercoil, arrived on the bridge in time to witness the Redemption take a critical hit from the second Kingship that had broken off of planet bombardment to engage the remnant. The bridge superstructure was warped and injured Militia personnel were strewn about the debris. The shields holding the atmosphere inside the bridge were nearing super critical when he noticed Commander Theodoulus carrying two wounded Saints over each shoulder stumble and fall as the deck lurched with another blast from the pursuing Kingships. As lives were hanging in the balance, Commander Theodoulus and Admiral Thaun, lifelong friends, ambulanced the injured into escape pods while the heroic pilot maneuvered what was left of the Redemption free of the debris field.

Admiral Thaun launched the final pod and returned to the bridge for the pilot but no one was there. The helm was gone. The Redemption, listing to port, was on her last leg. Punching in a final destination, Admiral Thaun stood silently among the ruin of his flagship praying fervently for the deliverance of his people.
Nodding once, he left the bridge at a dead run for the flight deck, hoping that one ship remained undamaged.

Meanwhile, Commander NYG and his remaining fleet of Archangels were frantically repelling wave upon wave of Glaives while Commander Torshan gathered up the escape pods, both aware that entering the jump point with two Kingships breathing down their necks was suicide.

Commander NYG, blasted the engines off of a Glaive as the last of Commander Torshan’s rescue crew entered the jump point. Only a single flight of Archangels were left defending and they were in bad shape. As the Kingship loomed, NYG braced himself for his final stand. The Kingship, however, shuddered with an explosion as the badly damaged Redemption rammed into one of its engines. Strangely enough, that set off a chain reaction that lit up fireballs of explosions thoughout the entire hull of the Kingship. The Vanduul were stunned by this turn of events and hastened back to the aid of their carrier.

The immediate absence of violent combat was deafening in its occlusion. With nothing pinging on long range scanners and with a heavy heart, Commander NYG entered the Jump point leaving behind lives lost, heartbreak and his friend and commanding officer, Jao Thaun.

To be continued...

re: Another Beginning (Saint's Exploration Initiative)

Chapter 2

A darkness lay heavy upon the field of battle broken only by blue arcs of electrical flares from sputtering power lines emerging from the tattered edges of ship debris. Where once was empty space, a morbid metal asteroid field full of empty dreams and cold hard death lay in its place. Cold; dead; a blackness reined where light could not penetrate. The creeping blackness etched its way across the military grade cockpit glass as the Super Hornet tumbled slowly in the zero-G gravity of space electromagnetically attached to a massive cross section of what was left of the Redemption flight deck. The schizophrenic landing deck rolled, yawed and pitched its way slowly through the debris field crushing smaller hull sections, rebounding off of larger sections, violently making its way to the dark side of the closest planet, accellerating as the planetary gravity field increased its grip in a silent and invisible tug of war between man and nature.

Remarkably, the Super Hornet had thus far escaped severe damage keeping its sole occupant alive through automated emergency life support. The pilot, slouched unconscious in the cockpit, was oblivious to the fitful acrobatic movements of the violently decommissioned flight deck thanks to the still functioning but rapidly dwindling G-lock system. Frost forming on the interior cockpit windows reflected the green dashboard switch lights eerily upon the bruised face of the pilot, clashing strangely with the dark red blood on his head. His flight suit, quickly donned, displayed no insignia or rank. None of those things mattered out here in the void where the difference between life and death can be measured by microns.

A painful beating of drums began somewhere among the debris. As the pain intensified, the location became more apparent until a light started to bloom somewhere deep along a narrow tunnel. The beating of drums became a heart laboring for life; The light, overbearing in its brightness, became a blinking red warning light. Strangely, there were two of them. The pilot straightened up in his seat and immediately regretted the movement as the pain behind his eyes intensified and the blackness returned.

The drums returned a second time with their associated pain. As the pilot opened his eyes, he carefully looked around. A hornet, he thought. 'Why am I here? Where is here?' Closing his eyes against the offending light, the pilot reached to the left of the cockpit, carefully avoiding the black void at the edge of consciousness, and opened a container which contained medical epinephrine, combat stabilizers and a complex assortment of various medical instruments. He injected a combat stabilizer in his neck and leaned his head back against the padded seat praying to God that the pain and nausea would subside.

"Warning. G-Lock failing. Emergency start-up sequence activated." The pilot was violently awakened by the sudden redistribution of his weight or, rather, the removal of it. He straightened in the cockpit, thankful that the combat stabilizer had taken affect. The two warning lights were now one and the frigid air in his lungs reminded him that he was inside of a hornet. The question was, why? He fastened the five point harness and quickly went through the pre-flight check honed by years of combat experience. As the frost started to melt, dripping water off of the canopy, the collision warning system started going haywire. Engines on, radar stat, hands on throttle and stick, the pilot prepared for evasive action. Looking through the canopy, he remembered the battle. The loss. When pieces of debris sprayed across his shields he increased throttle and carefully left behind what remained of his fleet. Taking only his tortured memories as he made his way to the jump hole.
