I'd say at least 10 mbs if you want to have smooth online gaming, but if you don't care about smoothness then 5 would be the bare minimum. Anything below that would be nearly unplayable for games that require online connection (the Division, and any multiplayer you want to play). I have a $70 package with Xfinity and get 100 mbs, so I feel like you could maybe look around at other internet providers to try to find the best deal.

My zip code is 78539, there isnt much of a selection for internet down here. There is satellite, dish, att, and time warner cable.

re: Internet speed for gaming?

5mbs as scooter says is bare minimum, although the biggest factor is latency (ping time) between you and the gaming server. this is ISP depended and location dependant.

Although here in Africa 4mbs line (4mbs/ down and 0.4mbs up) still gives a very satisfactory gaming experience. Having to wait for a game update to download is the more painful part.

If your line is not solo (other use it as well), you need to factor in that if someone is downloading, watching Netflix this will impact your line and gaming.

Of those choices, I would go AT&T because you can get decent speeds for a fairly ok price. I know they have this now https://www.att.com/shop/internet/gigapower.html You will have to see if it's in your area

Time Warner for $65 I get 200MB but waiting until the year is up than bomb increase.

AT&T gigapower is not in my area lol.

From my understanding, AT&T has cap limit, while TWC doesnt in my area and AT&T seems a little bit more pricey for what you get compared to TWC which I could be wrong.

I would go with a minimum of 10 and stay away from satellite.

re: Internet speed for gaming?

In my opinion there isnt much of a choice down here in deep deep south texas, so the only 2 choices I have is AT&T and TWC and both are very over priced. TWC I am paying $60 for a modem and service. It is 15Mbps with unlimited data. They dont have anything less than that. For the same about from AT&T I can get 24Mbps with 600GB data cap or 6Mbps with 300GB for $40.

$60 a month is crazy cheap. I pay $80.

If you can combine cable tv, house phone and internet you can sometimes save money on the bundle.

I'd avoid the cap as long as you can. You don't need crazy internet speeds to play games. 15M down with unlimited data would be what I'd choose. You can still watch movies and streams with that speed.

If you think you'll never hit that cap and you need to save money then go with the cheaper option. Just be careful not to pass that cap cause you'll end up paying more.

Just a thought, I know Verizon now has internet. I believe you can get unlimited internet through them as well. Not sure the cost.

re: Internet speed for gaming?

Wow.. I have nowhere near any of these speeds you guys are talking about and I play games just fine. I get like oh.. 2.7 mbps max download. Downloading patches is painful but the actual gameplay is just fine. The biggest factor is your latency to the servers, not how much data you can download. No game is shoving 10-15mbps down the pipe to however many thousands of concurrent users they have at a given time.
