On order....did you know it takes up to 15 days to get them in the mail?

Up to 15 days, hey? I think mine came within a week, so his may be here before too long.

Once the authenticator is on the account I'm sure he'll rest a lot easier. Happy

I don't know if TOR will offer an authenticator or not. If they do, I highly recommend it. For $6 (or whatever it is) it's a small price to pay to thwart hackers.

My son's WOW account was just hacked-AGAIN!!! This makes the second time in the last year. This topic is worth "bumping".

Hackers are getting more and more sophisticated as the gaming industry grows. The password was extremely complex and they still managed to get in through battle.net.

Add-ons used to be a virus risk mostly but now you can't even use them as they compromise your security. You can't alt-tab out of a game any longer to check gaming sites since this common practice is being exploited and sites can get in that way.

With the trend towards using your email address as your user name, you are running the risk of compromising your email account as well. I bet most of us have account related emails from various web site (games and/or ebay, amazon, etc.) stored in our saved emails. Confirmation emails from games we have signed up for? What about electronic receipts or bank stuff? It's not just your in-game gold that is at risk now.

Hopefully, we will see some pretty sophisticated account security associated with TOR when it releases. I haven't seen anything to suggest that this is the case though. So, my intention is to change my password frequently as well as change email address associated with the account (if it will allow it). I may even just forgo a subscription all together and just use game cards.

It's a bad world we live in. Be safe out there.

Pity some morons doesn't respect the ethical boundaries of hacking an account... I agree about TOR, as well.

Well, you get this little thingy in the mail which is linked to your WOW account. It gives you a authentication code to enter when you attempt to log into WOW. That code changes every so often which is apparently "sinc'd" with the log on server. Enter the wrong code and you can't log in.

This doesn't only happen to game accounts, I have had one for Case Bank and I reported it and it stoped the next day.

And I received 2 from Case thanking me for reporting it. So be carefull about any e-mails that ask you to click on links and put in your info in.

re: Important! *Gaming Account Security*

Getting the authenticator is a must for WoW these days. If you are still playing WoW and have an iPhone or Android phone you can download the authenticator for free.

For those of you who are making passwords you can't remember I would recommend using an encrypted storage method. Passpack.com for example is a good solution if you don't mind use an online service. At a minimum encrypt the file on your OS and password protect that file.

NOW the best thing you can do is use your computer as a non-root account. If using Windows just make a regular account and use that. Most zero day exploits are only a problem if the user is surfing the internet running with an admin account when they come across the compromised sites. In a nutshell, for the example of a browser exploit, all the exploit is usually doing is going to find a way to impersonate the logged in user and then call the remote server which has all of the virus', trojans, etc. to install. So if you are non-admin it can't install the nasty payload.

Anyways, food for thought as we get ready to start playing another game which maybe a huge target by hackers.

My sister plays WoW and she got hacked 3 or 4 times...finally she got one of those authenticators and she hasn't been hacked since. Really cool device.

If I remember it is just a flash drive type item that has to be plugged into her computer for her account to be accessed in any way.

I liked this post made by NC Soft on their support site that spoke to this issue

http://us.ncsoft.com/en/playsmart/security-post.html

Just as a reminder based on the above link speaking to the RMT and power-leveling 'services', this is taken seriously and addressed in our constitution

Quote:
Section I: Prohibited Actions
All members are prohibited from:

(c) Buying or selling MMO currency (gold) personally or through a website;

(d) Cheating which includes hacking the game client, installing cheats for the game client, hacking packets, altering memory data, duping credits, or any other shady method that gives the player an unfair advantage in the game;
