re: kickstarter

What do people think of Kickstarter for funding of a video game?

For instance lets say that we here on this board have the peopel to make a video game... what would the general opinion of using kickstarter to start funding it?

re: kickstarter

Sure, why not. I see no moral problem with it.

re: kickstarter

If you have the vision, and the ability, but not the funds then kickstarter is perfect.

My only advice would be to set a realistic funding goal. Dont set it too low because if you get peoples investments and then come up short because you didnt ask for enough money to get it done from the start, you'll be letting a lot of people down. If it costs too much and you dont get enough funding for it, at least you dont enter into something unprepared. No funds are sent until a kickstarter comes to a close having reached or passed its goal.

And if you do fail to reach your goal its not the end of your project, you can always try again at a later date.

re: kickstarter

The current issue of PC Gamer Magazine has an article on a game published with the help of a Kickstarter campaign. I think the game was Planetary Annihilation, and it was produced by the guy who created Total Annihilation and Supreme Commander, even.

The author asserted, "Kickstarter is starting to look like the definitive funding source for independent projects avoided by traditional publishers."

In general, it appears that "crowdsourcing" is starting to take off. I'm following the development of an indie movie called Gray State that raised over $60,000 for pre-production via IndieGoGo. That's another good example of the power of crowdsourcing.
